Artist Spotlight with Diane Martel

Written by Erin Moses

When we think about the biggest moments in music, we often think of the songs themselves, but just as often, it’s the visuals that stay in our heads. Diane Martel, one of the most influential music video directors of all time, brought some of the industry’s biggest hits to life through unforgettable visuals.

Born on May 7, 1962, in New York, she started out as a dancer and choreographer before becoming the creative force behind so many iconic videos. Diane directed some of my favorite songs and videos, including Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas Is You,” Miley Cyrus’s “We Can’t Stop,” and Nicki Minaj’s “Right Thru Me” and “Pills N Potions.” “All I Want for Christmas Is You” is a holiday classic, and the video perfectly captures the joy and excitement that return every year. “We Can’t Stop” marked a major turning point for Miley Cyrus, showcasing her shift from Disney star to pop powerhouse and sparking plenty of conversation in the process.

For Nicki Minaj, both “Right Thru Me” and “Pills N Potions” stand out as staples. In “Pills N Potions,” Diane showcased her creativity through symbolic visuals and unique effects, while “Right Thru Me” revealed a more emotional side of Nicki, especially in the opening dialogue that highlights frustration and heartbreak.

Sadly, Diane Martel passed away on September 18, 2025, after her battle with breast cancer. Still, her impact will live on for years to come. She gave us visuals that turned songs into cultural moments and timeless classics, leaving behind a legacy that shaped how we see music itself. Rest in peace Diane Martel.
